Fall in love with life


"Fall in love with yourself, fall in love with your life"


I read this quote the other day and it left me wondering: how can one fall in love with life when sometimes it just feels so chaotic, so full of problems? After some time I realized that we don't have to love the situations that are present in our lives right now but we can still fall in love with life itself because, after all, it is full of beauty and harmony, and we just have to be open and ready to see this beauty and love all around us.


So then the question shifts from: "how can I love my life" to "how can I be open to experience the fullness of this life?." When you realize that it isn't your life experiences the ones you have to love (the job, the relationships, the finances) but instead to love being alive and present to all that life has to offer - with the pleasant and the unpleasant, with the beauty and the chaos - it really feels like someone lifted a heavy weight off your shoulders; you stop resisting life and therefore allowing your life experiences to flow through you.


In this blog-post I offer some steps to reconnect with the experience of life.


1. Practice meditation/quiet sitting

The first thing I highly recommend is to spend a few minutes a day meditating or just sitting quietly listening to your breath and feeling what is present in your body as emotion or sensation, letting go of judgment. Get in touch with yourself by letting go of all the noise in your head even for a moment everyday. And remember to embrace yourself with kindness and compassion if difficult emotions are present for you at any given moment.


2. Start a gratitude journal.

Every night before going to bed, spend five minutes reflecting on how your day went. Can you list three things you were grateful for that day? Focusing on what went well will also help you place your awareness more often on all the beauty and blessings that are present in your life instead of being only aware of the chaos.


3. Surround yourself with people that make you happy.

Just like we clean our homes and work areas, it is also time to "spring clean" our relationships. Focus on the ones that bring laughter and friendship, love and understanding, sharing and listening, and start to consider letting go of the ones that make you feel anxious, sad or angry. And I don't mean you have to get rid of these relationships ASAP! Start by surrounding yourself with love for these relationships, sending love to all involved, and little by little you'll know when it's time to let go.


4. Say NO more often.

Before saying yes to yet another activity on your already packed full schedule, question your reasons to add one more thing to your day; feel where you are coming from: is it coming from the love you feel or from the fear of not being liked/loved? If the answer comes out of love then ask yourself: is this what I want/need right now? Just listen, the answer will come.


5. Spend time watching Nature.

Definitely. You don't have to go live in the woods or on the mountains isolated from everyone to see the beauty of nature. See (and smell) the flowers on your way to work/school, observe and touch the trees; watch the sky, the clouds; watch the sunrise and/or the sunset - you can see mother nature everywhere!! Be aware of nature wherever you are, notice how nature does not resist the changes happening all around, on the contrary, it embraces those changes and it lets them flow without tension.


I hope these few tips will help to start shifting your perspective on your life and life in general so you can start experiencing the fullness, love and beauty that life offers you everyday.
